I have heard a lot since I got in to Fuji cameras that they either are ISO invariant or have dual gain/dual native ISO sensors(I will just call it dual native ISO for now on). I have always taken these claims with a grain of salt. I have not seen good evidence to the ISO invariant claim. I have done my own testing and it is definitely not. As for the dual native ISO I was skeptical but hopeful that it was true, especially with so many people saying that they had seen it in their footage. Well I think I can put this rumor to rest.
Below I have done a simple test using a gray card that is evenly lit. I filled the whole frame with the gray card, which is 18% gray, and shot with ISOs 640, 1000, 1600, 2000, 4000, 8000, and 12800. In Davinci I zoomed in 400% to see as much detail as possible.
In this example you can clearly see that the ISO noise does not clean up at 2000, it only get worse. I think that the root of all of this is wishful thinking.
But the X-T4 does have amazing noise performance. Especially since it is almost exclusively luma noise and no chroma. That was a deciding factor for me that has kept me with Fuji and will keep me with them. You won't get the clean grain look from a Sony or Canon.
